Milk alternatives; what you need to know

Using milk alternatives to help you get the calcium and protein you need?

What do you need to know:

  • Not all milk alternatives (oat, rice, soy, etc.) are the same and they will differ in nutrition value from milk to milk, brand to brand

  • Not all will be fortified with calcium

  • Protein is usually not found in your rice, almond, or oat milk in large quantities. Soy milks tend to have the highest amount of protein in the milk alternatives space

  • Shake the carton/container of the milk if you have bought a fortified version (the fortificants e.g. calcium, tend to sink to the bottom)
